hi everyone....
i would like to make this forum to
teach ourselves how to composite our
works after rendering layers....
i have a good experience in....
-After effects
-Shake
-Nuke
-Digital Fusion.. a little bit
so...any question on how to composite
layers in Post, dealing with masks ....etc
i will do my best to answer it....
and anyone has a good experience
in composting ..... lets share our experience
here.... with the others whom have not good
knowledge with it....ok

first we need to match lighting..... and colors of light...
then we need alot of passes..
like..
muster layer ...(which has colors)
and some times we need the shadow separated from
the color....
to make it more transparent or give it a tint of color... like
blue..... from the sky...
and Occlusion pass
these are the main passes.... and all the coming are extras
and if they needed.......?? like
speculare, reflections, diffuse ,,....and much much more....
we will talk about them...... and how to use

i think we need to concentrate on (composting) as
a process to learn first,.. and everyone fly away as he likes
to go... either he use it as .... motion graphix or visual effects
like matching 3d with live....

ممكن اعرف يا hmsabry ما هي اعدادات تصدير
الصورة من المايا الى التلفزيون مثلا اي ما هو مقياس الصورة الذي تعملون به عندكم الذي تضعونه داخل المايا قبل الريندر ليتوافق مع برنامج الافتر افكت و بعدها ليتوافق مع شاشة القنوات التلفزية و ما هي النافذة التي اذهب اليها داخل المايا لضبط هذا القياس و شكرا

first....
broadcast file size should be 720 X 576
you will find it in render globals in image size
called (CCIR PAL/Quantal PAL)
this make a file size 720 X 576 and Pixel aspect
ratio 1.066
this aspect ratio is very important coz this controls
the shape of the pixel.... if its square pixel or stretched
a little bit
and the tv should be stretched like this preset
(CCIR PAL/Quantal PAL) this call DV-PAL
that we are working with...

the after effect has no default size to deal with
i mean any file you put in after it will work with
it just fine ,
but....!!! dont scale up...!! you can scale down
with no loss for quality... but scale up will loss data
and will pixelate the image....

جيد اخي انا جديد على برنامج Nuke عملت بالنسخة 4.6 لكن النسخة 4.7 غير مستقرة تماما لماذا ؟
اريد ايضا روابط لـ Tutorials الخاصة بهذا البرنامج العملاق!!
وايضا عندي استفسار لما تصدر عملك من اي برنامج 3 دي الى برنامج خاص بـ Compositing مثل العملاق Shake ( انا استعمل النسخة الخاصة بالويندوز الان 2.5 لان النسخة 4.1 الخاصة بـ Linux غير مستقرة عندي ) وتحاول تدمج Action Live مع Animation ( action 3d ) كيف يمكن الدمج بينهما بحيث تظهر Motion Tracking على شكل Rotoscopie في البرنامج !!! كيف يمكن عمل هذا ؟

look i used Nuke 4.5 and i joined a Nuke Community
in yahoo group and they talked about Nuke 4.7 and someone
upload it and i download it..
i used Nuke 4.5 in a project...and i finish it with Nuke
but i didnt use 4.7 till now in worlkflow... (its internal problem issue
in the studio... i must here done my works on after effect
coz ....!! there is no one here can work on Nuke except me...!!!)
B)
we are already getting in a new advertisement that has characters
moves in live shots and interact with live shots
i wish i can do it in Nuke....!!! but its not my opinion...!!
i will work in composting and i will blend the 3d with live shot
in this work there is too many elements
HDRI for location
lighting
animation
and in composting .... there is alot of work...
color matching,.... overall color correction,..edge bluring
for 3d elements, some effects must be added like
motion blur (some times will be added in post with plug ins)
and Zdepth (fog ,Blur "out of focus and in focus)
glows on hot spots... lens flare, and soo on

Nuke and shake they are (composting packages)i mean
mixing 3d layers adding effects and with dealing with color
correction ... they are Expert ...!! but they are not
motion graphics packages...!!!
After effects.... i love it but...!!! its a Motion graphics package
more than its a Composting package...
i mean it is Expert in this field but i dont like it in composting
in 3d layers and in color correction....
I'm Talking from a user wise.... not from a technical wise..!!!
soo.....
i like to take the power of every package and leave its weakness
and use every package in its position to take the best of it...!!
*yess friend eyeon fusion its digital fusion... coz eyeon is the
company which made it...

Nuke is powerful more than shake coz...
simply shake has been stopped in development on windows...!!!
Nuke is very smart in work, has a powerful feature
in color correction , effects, chroma key, tracking....
and much more..

first all what we need in first is the common passes....

A) Color (all the scene with light and shadows)
B) Occlusion
C) Pure Reflections (all objects reflect 100%)

in after effects
we put the color and we put the occlusion over it
with (multiply) as blending mode.
and we put the speculare over them as (screen).
and we put the depth in bottom layer and we can
turn its visibility off coz we use it with plugin to make
objects seems to be in focus and out of focus by this pass
this plugin called (lens_Care) "DepthOfField"

you can use photoshop and reach the same

but without the Depth of field (out of focus) coz
this is a plugin in after effect....

يا حازم قبل كل شيء انا اعتذر منك لانني لا استطيع المتابعة معك لان هذا
الامر كبير علي و انا مبتدئ على المايا و في علم الجرافيك ككل و لكن عندي سؤالين مهمين بالنسبة لي و اعتبرهما جانبين

the composting is the process that you collect your
render layers and do some effects and color correction.
but match moving is the process of simulating the live camera
in a live shot and make a 3d camera that takes the same movement
so its called (match moving)

I don't know about Nuke and Shake, but as you said AE is motion graphics package, for 3d edit, one must use a 3d edit package, such as Combustion and Fusion, I do understand you're not trying to hammer anybody here with 3d formats, rgb, exr, rla or any that actually stores the channels within the file, Combustion and Fusion read the Z-depth information from rla directly.
keep going mate, this should be fun, and I hope everyone can understand that multi-pass compositing is not a trick that makes things easier (eventhough considering the amount of work required to generate and tweak em all it isn't), sometimes doing something in one pass is an impossible task.

How is rendering a seperate Z pass is more controllable than storing it to a seperate channel within a format that supports it?
both fusion and combustion has layers and a timeline, however this is not what I'm talking about.
let me be clear about this, as a pass is different than a channel for example:
you can render your wiki scene, as a 4 tgas:
color
specular
Ao
and Z
or
3 rlas:
color
specular
AO
each of which contains Z as a channel, so an effect of DOF can affect each pass in a realistic fasion (think HDR rla, with motion blur, or Renderman Bokeh Effect).
In the end, I don't want to change the flow of the thread, All I'm saying thumbs up, and we need this kind of work around here.

First i didnt say that you must render Z-depth separate
you can embedded it into the file.
for me i was rendering it separately coz mentalray maya
doesnt render Zdepth and the other channels inside
RLA file... i heard Maya 2008 would do..
so i do it by myself (separately)
but Maya iff can store ZDepth and deal with it (in Nuke easily)
but after effects it couldnt .
you must render it RGB color separately
to use it in DOF (depth of field)
anyway...
it seems to me that you are very good in composting so
lets begin to help other ...(and leave this layer issue later :))

I'm sorry man if I sounded like a wise*** or something, but I got carried - as usual- sorry again.
On another note, I'm just approaching Maya, I didn't reach rendering yet, MR in Max however seems ok with OpenEXR or RLA or RPF, so I dunno.
two things though:
- When I started writing here, I wrote in English, Well, they don't appreciate it which is : S.
- As an Architectural Visualizer I know a bit about 3d compositing, to be honest only Combustion and Fusion [Didn't like Nuke and the external previewer thing, and Shake 2.5 for Windows suX], But I'm not much of a match mover or Chroma Keyer.
Sometimes a small comment can change alot, as some of you already know, Combustion on of the Lead compositer of the market [Windows wise at least], has a very close relationship with Max, so I was very happy spending time learning the program and comping things with it, however I noticed some very weird problem with the Alpha channel of my comps, and after a discussion here at the video editing, and thanks to the guys here, it turned out it was a global problem of Combustion.
So, your choice of the package is extremely important, eventhough I am a Fusion user now, [Alpha rules in this program] I do miss some of Combustion amazing ColorCorrections, and I hope I can contribute whatever I can to this thread.

i was rendering with high quality render
*high samples 0 min 2 max
*medium contrast contrast 0.5 (RGBA)
*filtering "Mitchel"
and this settings make the frame takes time "average 5 min."
and there is blurred reflection on the floor and that is heavy too.
you can decrease them ..
and remove the blurred reflections

*i made the square noisy to see the pixels
your image contains alot of pixels, this pixel carries the RGB color.
look closely to the edge of the square... you will see it sharp
because of the square's edges go strait with pixels
but when you draw a line which is not strait
the line will pixellate like this...

so if we need the edge go sharp so we need to add more pixels

in 3d we have the anti-aliasing
this is the process which we decide for how much pixels will be added.
we have 2 deferent ways in AA (Anti-Aliasing)
* Fixed samples
* Adaptive samples
Fixed samples.... you are tilling maya that i want you to raise the pixels
in all over the image whether there is a curve needs pixels or there is not...!! (Solid color)
and thats toooooooooooo much money
But Adaptive samples.... you are tilling maya that i want you to raise the
pixels at the places that needs more pixels... (at curves)

as shown above the pixelated edge for the low samples
with adaptive samples you determine the min. and the max. values for
the samples ..(min=at least add pixels with this rate, max=add pixles
but dont go high than this rate)

there is an Under Sampling and Over Sampling
over sampling means that the pixel subdivide.
0= 1 subdivision inside the pixel one time
1= 2 subdivision ....
and so on...
and under sampling that means combines more one
pixel in one sample ...
-1= combine 4 pixels
-2= combine 8 pixels
and so on....
so there must be a minimum and maximum value for sampling
like -2,0 -1,1 0,2 ... and so on.....

at places that needs more pixels... and the places that doesnt
need more pixels we never add pixels,
so...
there is very important thing in maya and there is very very few
people that use it ... samples Diagnose
samples diagnose show you the way that the samples spread in
the image

*to activate the sample diagnose ... go to render global > Diagnostic > (chick samples)...
as you can see...
in samples -2,0 the samples (white dots) has been spread in a wide range
and by raising the sample bit by bit the samples is pushed into the edges
and if you see the render you will find the edge go sharp because the
edges has more more pixels to smooth
but in -2,0 the samples has been wasted in the image so the edge is
pixelated....
i will make a stop here and i wont people to discuss this point.
to make sure that everyone understand this.

render from maya sequence files with any image
extension (iff, tga, tif, png, ......) and after you finish
open after effects and load the sequence and render
it from after effects .AVI , .MOV
but dont ever never never render from maya AVI
coz if the render crashed or stop for any reason the
file will be corrupted and you will render it again
so the perfect way is to render sequence files
and collect it again with after effects

prepare your settings in render globals... put the first frame num.
and put the end num.
and go to rendering and from render > batch render

the second thing in the AA (Anti-Aliasing) is
the contrast

the contrast is the way to make maya detect the edges
and put samples...
the less number you put the narrow range the samples will
be spread around the edged and the sharp the edge is and
the less samples lose in the solid places and the more money
you will pay...!!
and the more nambers you put the more loss of samples in
the image and will pixelate the edges.. and the more money
you will safe...!!
there must be combination between sampling and the contrast
and by the diagnose you will see the samples and how its spread
but any way....
i am usually use sampling 0,2 or 1,3
and contrast 0.05 (for RGB and Alpha)
or 0.025 or 0.01
but i am only using very low contrast iffffff there is very small
details or objects very far
at last....
always remember... the more setting you are puting the more
money you will pay.... so pay for what deserve....!!!

I couldn't get it...
you told us before that low contrast will make more samples at the edges and u will pay more money....so in case like far objects why u need to pay more money ?? it may be even hard to be seen

lets say that there is a plane with a checker texture on it
with color black and white...ok
if you render it, it will be fine and looks good
BUT...... if you send this plane far away from
the camera .... the checker will be small.... and if its very far
the checker will noise...
because maya couldnt understand
there is a lot of details (checker) and should be put in 5 pixels
(for example)
so... you must raise up the sample (to subdivide
the pixels ) and decrease the contrast to push the samples
into the (Objects Edges and to color difference)
try it....
another thing ... the default textures in maya it called
"procedural textures" it means that maya has its equations
to create it and maya calculates its shape every frame
so you need to draw in photoshop a checker or bake
the texture in maya to test this problem

the layers should go like this....
1) color
2) occlucion (multiply)
3) speculare (add with low opacity)
the depth .... you should get the depth of field plugin
for after effect
you put the depth (at the bottom of the composition)
and you put the depth of field plugin on an adjustment layer
on the top of all layers and refer the depth layer in the plugin
to the depth sequence

did you see the grains that comes out of the 64 samples you send.?
you cant render with this grains coz these grains will make (noise)
you have to know that when the frame reach 2 or 5 or even 15 minutes
its not a very big deal.... good quality =more time
i am talking about the production quality
theres frames takes 3 or 4 hours or even more
to get the realistic look....
for me... until the frame didnt reach 40 minutes its ok
coz i am using passes ... so i am separating and
simplify the passes

look i am really when i want to get the reflection
pass alone i am use a blin shader with 1 reflection
and diffuse 0 and specular color is white
this gives me a pure reflection
but this if i want to extract the reflectivity from
the image then you need to use (Control Buffer) shader
to extract all the data from inside maya
and this part exactly ... i am searching for now
and i am trying to learn it...

there is some issues i wanna ask about
1rst my depth the contrast is to low between the 3 boxes so the DOF effect the 3 boxs with the same value of blure so how can increse the contrast
2nd is a must to get a clean Occlusion pass because i rise up the samples to 256

what do you mean with contrast.??
if you mean Samples contrast... so its yes
0.3 not too much contrast coz simply you dont need
noise in occlusion.

this is the mask pass that i use...
i go to after effects and add on it a color key
or i recommend to use (Key Light "plug in") its perfect
and after pick the color that you want to drop, so the color will
be cropped then you add a invert channel (to alpha) so the mask
will be on the color that you cropped
then you use it

there is some issues i wanna ask about
1rst my depth the contrast is to low between the 3 boxes so the DOF effect the 3 boxs with the same value of blure so how can increse the contrast
2nd is a must to get a clean Occlusion pass because i rise up the samples to 256
first the depth you need to edit in the shader of the Z depth
to increase the contrast
break the connection of the far clip of the camera and decrease
the value
second... the occlusion must be clean ... but not 256
sometimes 64 with good Anti-Aliasing is fare enough

look taha .. you have to have a look in maya help files
in (rendering layers) read about it .... theres alot you have to

a) Color (surface shader _solid colors_)
b) Occlusion
c) occlusion (in shadow only)
d) Pure reflections (for HDRI)
e) sampler info pass (shader makes a fall off ramp from the edge
to the center of the model) i will explain it to you.

look the very powerful plugin in keying (remove the chroma)
is the KEY LIGHT
try to searvh for it and download it...

there is a lot of reasons that make this flicker
A)GI photons amount too low and the radius too big
B)the edges sharp (90 degree) it must be rounded edges
in the room to help the photons to not stuck there
C)FG rays too low and the min, max. radius not right
to the size of the scene...
but to know where is the problem .. is it GI or FG
test everyone alone...!!

hey folks , from 4 or 5 post's for me i was made a interior room render test , and i got some blotches in my scene , so i keep on searching about more and more of mentalray tuts and tip's , and found a great one and useful link for someone Called "Dagon" :)
so let's follow this tut and post our test's then we can update our test's from exporting one image to make it a passes render to involve back to the main subject of this thread , in the few next our i will send my test

but there is a little flicker at the top corner
a think its from FG
and i think you should raise up the FG filter to
maybe 1 or 2 to smooth the FG flickers
and the area light need a littel bit more sambles
(look at the SHEEESH shadow) has grains and need
more samples

اخ حازم عندي استفسار بخصوص ال compression في ال AfterEffect
لما بعمل رندر من AE ,لاي ملف بهي الطريقه :
Format : QuickTime
Compression Type : Uncompressed
طبعا الملف بيطلع حجمه كتير كبير ، فلازم اعمله compression ، عن طريق برنامج متل : ffmpegX طبعا هاد البرنامج لاجهزة الماك ، وممكن عن طريق Quicktime , بس ماعندي النسخة ال Pro
.
في برنامج الcompression، متل ال ffmpegX او اي برنامج اخر ، هل في صيغه معينه لحفظ الملف بجودة عاليه ، وهل في برنامج تاني ممكن يعملي الموضوع ده .
انا جربت كتير formating ، بس مش عارف اميز الافضل وبعضها بلاقي اللون بيغمق في الفيديو ,وقريت الموضوع دة اللي في CGforum ، بس لخبطني بصراحه.

بص يا صديقي ....
مبدئيا لازم ت render الشغل من after effect
quicktime .. uncompressed
عشان الملف يبقي full quality مايبقاش الوانه
افتح (بهتانه) او اغمق ...من الضغط compression
اما لو عايز compression كويس
quicktime ..... Photo JPG 100%
او
quicktime ..... sorenson 100%
احنا بنستعملهم دايما ... في ال previews

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
هذا الموضوع شيق جدا اقصد موضوع تركيب المواد
سؤالي هل يوجد في المايا صيغة اشبه ب rpf في الماكس
يعني امكانية اعطاء id for opject
مما يمكنني من استخدام اي id ارغب فيه في برنامج الافتر لوحده
وبدون الحاجة الى تكرار رندر الليرات لكل opject خصوصا اذا كنت
استعمل مئة opject مثلا
وهل يوجد طريقة لتسجيل ال zdepth داخل الصورة المصدرة
